CO² footprint at product level
The following excerpt from the CO₂ balance sheet looks at CO₂ emissions in Scope 3 at product level.
CO² balance 2024 Product level
In summary, our largest CO₂ emitters in Scope 3 at product level in 2024 are: Purchasing raw materials (95%) of which aluminum (85%) Transport of raw materials and products (3%).
1
Purchasing aluminum
Purchased aluminum is by far the largest contributor to our CO₂ emissions across all scopes, accounting for around 85% in 2024. The production of aluminum is extremely energy-intensive, which means that the production of every kilogram of aluminum generates a considerable amount of CO₂ - around 8.6 kg of CO₂ per kilogram of aluminum. In 2020, we purchased "green certified aluminum" from our main supplier for the first time.
Instead of the high conversion factor of 8.6 kg CO₂ per kilogram, this enabled us to use our supplier's CO₂ data, which was initially below the European average at 5.7 to 6.7 kg CO₂ per kilogram. By continuously increasing the proportion of CO₂-reduced aluminum, we can further reduce CO₂ emissions in purchasing every year, which has a positive impact on our overall CO₂ footprint. The conversion factor of our main supplier is 4.0 kg CO₂ per kilogram of aluminium (CO₂-reduced), as they are constantly working on reducing their emissions and optimizing their production processes.
2
Purchasing steel & plastics
At 7%, steel purchasing is the second largest area of our CO₂ emissions. In recent years, there have only been sales-related fluctuations here. If you add the purchase of plastic at around 2%, total material purchasing accounts for around 95% of our total carbon footprint at 22,219 tons of CO₂. The analysis of Scope 3 is therefore of crucial importance.
3
Transportation of raw materials and products
The calculated CO₂ emissions for the transportation of raw materials from our suppliers to us and for the transportation of products to our customers amount to a total of 628 t in 2024. This corresponds to around 3% of total emissions.
